Get IT acting as business partner!
What doesn’t deliver better business value, will not be done!
Doesn’t this sentence frighten most of you? No toys? Distraction? Is that what it is about? — I don’t think so. It states the simple truth which lies behind the concept of business partnership, and why it had to follow another such concept, which has long failed: service provider. However, I can’t fight the feeling, that exchanging terms has not changed any prerequisites, and that service provider already implied, what business partner wants to explain. And that’s why I wait for business partnership to fail. And am working hard on an alternative way to success in IT Service Management for you.
In my experience, there have been many names for this: sharpening one’s knife, keeping focussed, streamlining, lean management, and my all-time favorite: business alignment. ITIL V2 was packed with claims on the importance of proper business alignment as the driving force of all IT service management effort. The processes of IT Service Management should be run in a way, that would best align with the business processes, as to get the best benefit for business from the supporting IT Infrastructure systems. All of this may work excellent in well-defined and slowly changing business situations.
What really does go wrong in battle situations appears to be mutual understanding and, as a consequence of this, trust. As an entrepreneur, your incomprehension may be the lack of passion for the shared vision which you try to make possible by running your organisation. Or maybe a lack of self discipline which annoys you. As an IT service agent your incomprehension may be the lack of devotion to your expertise. Or maybe your necessity to recover.
Let me show you how to turn this sentence from a frightening threat into rewarding motivation.
